DISCOVER HOW WE COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER
In doing their research, Bandler and Grinder discovered that people have three basic methods of perceiving the world around them:
✓ Visual – See
✓ Auditory – Hear
✓ Kinesthetics – Feel
In the field of psychology, it’s called Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
We all have different ideas of reality – ways in which we perceive the world – and we can only really trust people who look at the world the way we do. If we feel understood, we give people our trust and open up to them more easily.
Those people who are visuals see the world,
The auditories hear it,
The kinesthetics feel it.
These three mental maps are ways of organising all the stimuli that we receive at any given moment. They help us to understand the world and to relate to it. With these mental maps as guides, we make decisions on how to respond to whatever is going on around us.
The use of mental maps is unconscious. A person doesn’t choose which map he or she will use with which to communicate.
Preferred Modes of Thinking
The important point is to think of mental maps as preferred modes of thinking; what a person is most comfortable with; what seems like the most natural way of understanding the world. It is the mode people use when they are most relaxed or unguarded, and it is the mode that produces the strongest reaction when communicated back to a person.
Communication Styles
When you first meet someone and in your conversation, have you ever said to yourself, “wow, I really connect with this person,” or, “oh my goodness, I just can’t get on the same wavelength as this person.”
The chances are that your preferred communication style does not match theirs.
